Going Deeper - from 'Words of Life'

Meditate on this poem, first published in the May-August 2011 issue.

Wind-tossed, as fluid as a storm-swept sea,
Foam-flecked, cream-coloured, like a wave’s high crest;
Hurled back and forth ever relentlessly,
Doubt fills your spirit and denies your rest
James, Son of Thunder, let the storm ride past,
Foam-flecked, cream-coloured, let your faith be clear;
Let Christ come walking on the waves at last,
Hear now his call: ‘It is I, be of good cheer!’
Storm-clouds of life my spirit may appal,
Foam-flecked, cream-coloured, casting faith awry.
Harbour is far away, God’s over all.
Nothing must shake my faith. Let it stay high.
Must it, foam-flecked, cream-coloured, be a wraith
What I once cherished as a living faith?

What I once cherished as a living faith
Must it, foam-flecked, cream-coloured, be a wraith?
Nothing must shake my faith. Let it stay high.
Harbour is far away. God’s over all.
Foam-flecked, cream-coloured, casting faith awry,
Storm-clouds of life my spirit may appal.
Hear now his call: ‘It is I, be of good cheer.’
Let Christ come walking on the waves at last,
Foam-flecked, cream-coloured, let your faith be clear;
James, Son of Thunder, let the storm ride past:
Doubt fills your spirit and denies your rest,
Hurled back and forth ever relentlessly,
Foam-flecked, cream-coloured like a wave’s high crest:
Wind-tossed, as fluid as a storm-swept sea.
