Jesus – and his needy family

Jesus had come to make a difference. He was there to correct misconceptions about the nature of God, what God required and the things in life that really mattered. The authorities needed to be challenged about the over-emphasis they were giving to ritual and procedure, and the lack of emphasis on care for the poor. The poor and disadvantaged were not there to be looked down on or to make the well-off look important. Jesus described the poor – the sick, naked, hungry, homeless and in prison – as his ‘brothers’. They were to be helped. To ignore them was like ignoring the God in whose image they had been made. Think again about your priorities, said Jesus.
