Anti-Human Trafficking
Anti Human Trafficking -Oyana Project
INTRODUCTION
Anti-human trafficking (OYANA) is a community project helping addressing social problems in the community. It is in the first phase in The Salvation Army Kenya West Territory which will be running for 3 years (2018-2021). Due to Covid 19 the project was extended for 6 months to cover up the activities that are pending making the first phase to end in April 2022. The project is operating in 3 clusters Kisumu, Bungoma and Eldoret. Even though human trafficking is all over the territory this came in as a result of research where they were found to be hot spot areas as we shall be expanding to other clusters in future.
GOAL
To decrease human trafficking incidences and reduce the vulnerabilities of at-risk people in communities through awareness raising, providing greater access to preventative and restorative services and strengthening the AHT networks and referral systems.
OBJECTIVES
1.Communities actively address and minimize human trafficking risk factors through effective preventative measures.
2. Improved access to preventative and restorative interventions for high-risk vulnerable individuals and survivors (and their families if relevant).
3. Strengthened network of AHT stakeholders that provides collaboration opportunities against human trafficking and creates referral pathways for survivors and communities
The project is involved in the 3 broad activities:
1.Training and awareness in the communities and this came up whereby majority of members in the communities did not understand the term human trafficking. During training and awareness, we identify areas to raise awareness whereby the project requirement is to work with 4 community groups /Media,4 churches and 4 schools in each cluster. After training we identify active members who lead the community and ensuring the community are identifying their own protective measures.
2.We identify community members at risk, survivors or families affected by trafficking in communities through awareness program or referral. This is achieved by using the ASO tool which helps us in assessment of survivors and those at risk. We provide empowerment both to people at risk and the survivors and this is according to their capacity, skills, strengths and the resources available in the community. This is because of the sustainability of the project whereby the community /individuals can manage their own resources.
3. We identify possible partners and arrange meetings; the project is working with different ministries from the government and other NGOs. This help us for the referral purposes and strengthening Anti-human trafficking networks through hosting partnerships workshop, practitioner workshops, developing agreement and planning partnerships activities.
