Officer Training University College (OTUC)
The Officers’ Training University College (OTUC) is proudly situated in Turbo, approximately 80 km from the Territorial Headquarters in Kakamega. In 2020, the college achieved accreditation and was granted Affiliate status by the Association for Christian Theological Education in Africa (ACTEA) to offer Certificates and Diplomas in Pastoral Studies. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Kenya West Territory and Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) in 2020, leading to the enrolment of 31 cadets, who graduated in 2022 with Diplomas in Theology. Currently, there are 47 cadets pursuing Diplomas in Theology, with graduation scheduled for October 2024.
OTUC Journey
The journey of training officers in Kenya began in 1923 within the larger East Africa Territory, when David Gakumo became the first Kenyan Cadet and Officer of The Salvation Army.
In the initial years, the Kenya West Territory sent cadets to the National Officers’ Training College (NOTC) in Thika, part of the Kenya East Territory, for their training. However, as the number of pro-candidates grew and the demand for officers increased with the establishment of the new Corps, the Kenya West Territory initiated its training program in 2011.
On December 9, 2010, four pioneering officers (two couples) were appointed as the inaugural training college staff under Major Fredrick Khamalishi, the first Training Principal. In January 2011, the college welcomed its first group of cadets—the Proclaimers of Resurrection session—admitting 21 individuals.
On February 12, 2012, thirty-six Envoys, comprising 15 couples and six singles, embarked on a three-month residential training program. These Envoys had been studying The SALT lessons since 2005.
Initially, due to a lack of dedicated facilities, cadet training took place within the Territorial Headquarters premises. Cadets were accommodated in a repurposed storehouse turned hostel at the Shimalavandu THQ staff compound, traveling daily to learning activities in a college bus.
