Mozambique is prone to cyclones, which bring heavy rains and floods. In December 2024, Cyclone Chido made landfall in Nampula, Mozambique, causing widespread devastation. The cyclone brought heavy rains and strong winds, leading to significant flooding and damage to homes and infrastructure. Thousands of people were impacted and at least 100 people died.
Cyclone Dikeledi, which formed in late December 2024, and resurfaced on 18 January 2025, further exacerbated the situation in Nampula. The cyclone affected around 35,000 people in the province, causing extensive flooding and the destruction of more than 15,000 houses. Five people died.
The combined effects of these cyclones underscores the importance of continued relief efforts and resilience-building to support the impacted communities.
The Salvation Army is responding to the ongoing relief efforts in Nampula by providing essential food items for 400 families.
