Gap years and mission programmes

Germany: voluntary social year

Complete a Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (ages 16 to 26) or a Bundesfreiwilligendienst (for those over 26) with The Salvation Army in Germany.

Volunteer with a mission team in the red-light district, support older people in a retirement home or get stuck into the mission and ministry of a local congregation.

Opportunities are open to German citizens and international applicants. International applicants should be at least 18 years old and be able to speak German. Applicants from outside the European Union will need a visa.

United Kingdom and Ireland: gap years

Put faith into action as you support a local Christian community in the UK. A Salvation Army gap year is a great opportunity to explore leadership, discipleship and mission.

Gap years run from September to July and are open to young people aged 18 to 25.

United Kingdom and Ireland: Terrain

A year 'in' rather than a year 'out', Terrain gives you the opportunity for discipleship in community with other young people while staying in your own local context. Journey through the Gospels as you learn through online sessions, residential weekends, mentoring and personal study.

The Terrain course runs from September each year and is open to young people aged 18 to 25 based in the UK or Ireland.

USA: summer camps

Work as a camp counsellor at one of the many Salvation Army summer camps in the USA. Summer camps give children, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, a fantastic opportunity to explore nature and make new friends - and camp counsellors are an essential part of the experience!

Find current vacancies and application requirements on The Salvation Army USA website.

USA Eastern: Hands On

Join a short summer mission trip with other young adults from The Salvation Army's USA Eastern Territory. Partner with Salvation Army ministries in different cultures as you learn, serve and work together.

Open to Salvation Army members aged 18 to 28 with a valid US passport.
