Weekend of spiritual renewal and celebration in Singapore

Salvationists and community partners gathered to reflect on the enduring call to serve, celebrate milestones of faith and affirm the Army’s mission to bring Christ’s love to all.

The visit of Commissioner Edward Hill (Chief of the Staff) and Commissioner Shelley Hill (World Secretary for Women’s Ministries) brought a powerful wave of spiritual encouragement and renewed vision across The Salvation Army’s Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand Territory.

From 25 to 27 July, Salvationists and community partners gathered in Singapore to reflect on the enduring call to serve, celebrate milestones of faith and affirm the Army’s mission to bring Christ’s love to all.

The visit commenced with officers councils, held at the Singapore Central Corps auditorium. This spiritually rich session drew 145 officers, envoys and cadets together under the themes The Privilege of Service and Faithful Through the Journey.

Commissioner Shelley Hill opened with a devotion based on God’s enduring promise, ‘My grace is sufficient for you’. Commissioner Edward Hill reminded officers of their divine calling to be humble, accountable servant leaders – vessels of God’s grace who empower others and build a lasting legacy. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 12:27-28, the Chief of the Staff urged unity, challenging leaders to serve as one body in Christ.

On Friday 25 July, the annual Red Shield Appeal Luncheon gathered key public, private and community partners in support of The Salvation Army’s social services programmes. Themed Our Purpose Remains, the event celebrated the Army’s 90-year legacy in Singapore, while raising more than $450,000 through generous donations and an art auction. These funds support more than 25,000 individuals annually across 14 centres.

A triple celebration

On Saturday, the spirit of celebration filled the Singapore Central Corps as 450 Salvationists and friends united for the Festival of Praise, commemorating The Salvation Army’s 90th anniversary in Singapore, the successful conclusion of the Territorial Strategic Mission Plan (2020–2025) and the retirement of Territorial Commander Colonel Hary Haran.

Commissioners Hill and Commissioner Gillian Downer, former territorial commander and zonal leader, paid tribute to Colonel Haran’s contributions to the territory and beyond. The Chief reminded everyone present what it takes to be a soldier of Jesus Christ: to enlist, be obedient, loyal, disciplined and engaged in battle.

Later that day, Commissioners Hill officially launched the Sojourn Care Centre, a ministry of compassion to Singapore’s migrant workers. More than 50 guests and partners witnessed the dedication of this vital ministry hub, which offers a traditional Chinese medicine clinic, physiotherapy, food vouchers, transport cards and essentials. Through dormitory visits, excursions, games, skills-based workshops and fellowships, the centre reaches more than 2,000 migrant workers each month and aims to foster well-being and community integration.

The next day, the Hills visited Prison Support Services, joining a chapel service for released prisoners. In a heartfelt moment of testimony, Ashwin, an ex-inmate turned volunteer, shared his journey of transformation through faith after more than a decade in prison. Commissioner Edward Hill delivered a short but impactful exhortation, encouraging all to keep their eyes focused on Christ.

A legacy of faithfulness

The weekend culminated with a holiness meeting at Changi Corps, where Commissioners Hill enrolled two junior soldiers and three senior soldiers, and commissioned four local officers.

In his closing message, the Chief of the Staff urged believers to live as a ‘logo for Christ’ – a symbol of lives saved and continually sanctified by grace. The corps rejoiced in the opportunity to reconnect with international leadership and recommit to faithful service, drawing strength from Christ and from one another.
