The Salvation Army is gearing-up to respond to the humanitarian disaster in Sudan, which has been widely reported by international news agencies. It is assessing the situation, in consultation with other aid agencies and non-governmental organisations, to see what it can add to the response currently taking place.
The situation is expected to be a long-term problem and The Salvation Army is finalising plans to send in a team to conduct a fact-finding visit to enable an appropriate response. Any proposed new relief effort will be reported immediately on the International Headquarters web site, www.salvationarmy.org
As already reported on the site, members of the movement's International Emergency Services team are currently in Uganda, completing a needs assessment in order to respond to what the United Nations has described as the 'world's biggest forgotten emergency'. The situation is even worse than the team feared but The Salvation Army is particularly well placed to make an effective response to the crisis there as it already has an active presence in that country.
An 'International Headquarters Africa Disaster Fund' has been set up to fund emergency operations throughout the continent.
