A brilliant idea

Major Peter McGuigan writes about All the World and introduces its team

A magazine called All the World invites curiosity! On hearing the title you could wonder just how much of ‘the world’ can fit into one magazine. Being ‘online’ increases the possibility but it still seems a big push.

What elevates The Salvation Army’s All the World magazine to the status of a brilliant idea is that the three words are from Jesus. In his commission to the very first Christ-followers, he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone’ (Mark 16:15, NLT).

While the words are the Lord’s, the title is Salvation Army Founder William Booth’s idea! ‘All the World’ is a powerful masthead for The Salvation Army’s international magazine because it describes the heartbeat of the movement. From its earliest days, The Salvation Army’s vision and mission has been the transformation of ‘all the world’. Our people have sought to bring the life-transforming love of Jesus to the world in both words and actions.

The new digital All the World aims to tell the story of this mission and of the lives of those who make it happen. And the magazine’s team is similarly committed. We have four important goals: 1. To inform through our storytelling, 2. To inspire hope and passion for mission engagement where you are, 3. To nurture the spiritual life of our readers, and 4. To challenge readers’ perspectives.

The team

Laura Booth is the magazine’s Editor. Laura has worked in Salvation Army Communications since 2011 as a writer, a sub-editor and an editor. Her editorship of All the World is part of a wider role in the current International Communications as In-House Content Writer. Prior to this, she was Editor of The Salvation Army Year Book. Laura has a Bachelor of Arts (Journalism). She describes herself as ‘a passionate storyteller’.

Berni Georges has served the mission of The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters as a graphic designer and photographer for more than 20 years. In that time, Berni has been the principal designer for the All the World in its print format and continues now with the new online All the World. He is the creator of the new All the World masthead. Berni has also worked on The Salvation Army Year Book, the former Revive magazine and Salvation Army books. He has also written for Salvation Army publications. Berni has a Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design and Illustration) and says he is ‘a creative soul with a love for people and Jesus’.

Joel Marks has recently commenced with International Headquarters in a maternity cover position as Web Manager. Joel’s responsibility for All the World is ensuring posts and links in the magazine are uploaded in a timely way and fully accessible to our readership. Joel maintains the All the World web pages and is working on the ongoing refinement of the magazine’s online presence and look. Joel holds a Bachelor of Science (Open) focusing on computer science, international development and business collaboration. He is a trained solution-focused coach.

Marina Ley is a staff writer for All the World. Her first contribution is titled ‘Chasing the Music’ and will be posted on Friday 3 October 2025. Marina has been with the International Communications team since June 2025 in a maternity cover capacity. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology).

The All the World team works closely with all other sections of International Communications to achieve the best possible outcomes for the magazine in both its content, its accessibility and its reach.
