Thursday, December 30 2004 – Salvation Army relief workers based in India report that in the coastal areas of South West India devastated by the effects of the tsunami they have distributed aid to homeless people who are sheltering in three hastily set up camps.
They say the most urgent immediate need is for sleeping mats and bedding, clothing and household items. ‘15,000 people have lost everything except the clothing they were wearing,’ says the team leader.
Elsewhere in Kerala State The Salvation Army’s Trivandrum High School is being used as a temporary refuge, with the Salvation Army team providing truck loads of food and clothing.
The aid is being partially funded by generous donations from Salvationists in Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar, despite many of them living very simple lifestyles.
