Salvation Army workers in the Dominican Republic concentrate relief efforts on remote town
Jimani is a six-hour drive from the capital city of Santo Domingo, creating logistical challenges for any relief operation. It is estimated that in this one community more than 600 permanent homes were destroyed and a further 600 severely damaged. Around 400 people from the town are known to have been killed but the final figure is likely to be much higher when the town's large number of illegal Haitian immigrants is taken into account.
Despite the difficulties of reaching the remote location, The Salvation Army has committed itself to offer further aid to the families. The Salvation Army’s World Services Office in Washington, USA, and Salvationists in Sweden contributed to the initial response, which was also funded by donations received through the International Headquarters web site. Funds which will allow The Salvation Army to continue its vital support in the area are still being sought.
