Salvation Army in Canada Declares May as Dignity Month

Salvation Army's Canada and Bermuda Territory has declared May to be 'Dignity Month'

THE Salvation Army's Canada and Bermuda Territory has declared May to be 'Dignity Month'. It is sponsoring a number of events and activities to help educate everyday Canadians about the importance of respecting the rights of the addicted, the homeless and those who have met with hard times.

Anyone visiting the Dignity website has the opportunity to sign up to the 'Dignity Manifesto', which states:

I believe that:

  • Everyone should have access to life’s basic necessities
  • Poverty is a scourge on society that puts dignity out of reach
  • People’s lives change when they are treated with dignity
  • Everyone has a right to a sense of dignity
  • The fight against poverty deserves my personal attention.

The website contains information about the Dignity Project and examples of people who have kept their dignity in trying circumstances, with the help of The Salvation Army.

The focal point of the month will be a live event called 'Dignity Speaks', held at The Salvation Army's Toronto Harbour Light on Sunday 15 May. Featuring the Juno award-winning group Downhere and hosted by Herbie Kuhn, the voice of the Toronto Raptors NBA basketball team, 'Dignity Speaks' will seek to entertain, educate and inspire those wishing to learn more about The Salvation Army's Dignity Project.

The event will be streamed online at www.SalvationArmy.ca/dignity.
