Overcomers: An Easter Message from Commissioner Shelley Hill

An Easter message from Commissioner Shelley Hill, World Secretary of Women's Ministries.

Commissioner Shelley Hill

Have you ever experienced the joy of winning?

I’ve never earned trophies or medals for sports, music, or academics. The closest I’ve come is winning a couple’s bowling tournament with my husband – it’s a fun memory, but not exactly championship glory!

But I know the feeling of victory because my life is marked by the triumph of the Risen King. He, who overcame death and sin, won me to Him. In John 16:33, Jesus assures that there is no greater victory. He says: ‘In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.’

The reality of this victory is affirmed by the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15: ‘Where, O death, is your sting? … Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.’

Easter reminds us of Jesus’ ultimate triumph, not only over sin and death, but over every challenge we face. In John 17, before His arrest, Jesus prayed three prayers: for His glory, for His disciples, and for all who believe, asking for our protection, joy, sanctification, and unity. He prayed these things for you and for me.

The cross is a symbol of total reconciliation, uniting us with God and with one another. It reminds us that Jesus, who conquered death, overcomes our despair and division. In His love and sacrifice, we share in eternal victory. His triumph was once and for all, and it is for all of us.

It is not distant history but a personal reality: united in His love, we are overcomers!

As Charles Wesley’s hymn proclaims: ‘Love’s redeeming work is done; fought the fight, the battle won… Made like Him, like Him we rise – Ours the cross, the grave, the skies! Hallelujah!’

This Easter, may we each find hope and strength in the risen King, who equips for every task and leads us into victory.
