OVERVIEW OF THE SALVATION ARMY SCHOOL SYSTEM

 HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM

The Salvation Army is a Christian Denomination established in 1865 by William and Catherine Booth and extended its Christian mission officially in Liberia in 1988 with Major Lenard Millar as the first Head of Mission. The vision and mission of the Army are to teach and preach Christianity and to also contribute meaningfully to meeting human needs.  The core of our organization since its inception has been to save and serve humanity. It is against this backdrop, we entered into meeting one of Liberia’s most essential needs by providing quality education in the country. Since our establishment in Liberia, we have opened and operated primary and secondary schools in six counties in Liberia and there are plans on the way to extend our services to all other counties.

Under the auspices of Capt. Brian J. Knightley, the first Salvation Army School was opened on 17th Street, Sinkor, Monrovia. It started as a kindergarten school in 1992. The school was relocated on 5th Street, Sinkor in the building now occupied by ECOBANK. The school went up to elementary level and was named Len Millar after the First Head of Mission of The Salvation Army in Liberia. The establishment of the Len Millar Primary & Elementary School opened a corridor for the establishment of additional classroom as students enrollment increased in the School. As a result of the influx of students due to the direct result of the quality of education and moral discipline the System provided, an urgent need arose to find a suitable site to build a structure that will respond to the demand for enrollment of students in the school. The then General Services Agency grounds at the 24th Street overlooking the Atlantic Ocean were bought. It was not until 2002 when the building was completed and the school was transferred into its newly constructed modern complex on 24th Street, Sinkor. This complex houses two school campuses under two separate administrations-LMPES and LMJSHS with each having 12 classrooms and sizable administration block and other facilities (including library, science and computer laboratories, multi-purpose covered gymnasium, etc).

The rise in demand of students to get the quality education provided by The Salvation Army led to the establishment of the William Booth School Complex on Pipeline Road in Paynesville in 1998. The school center also runs from primary to senior high with all necessary facilities. The school compound also has other facilities such as clinic (which is opened to both students and outsiders especially the Paynesville dwellers), gigantic basketball court, a fascinating church (the Paynesville Corps) plus many more. After the construction of the William Booth School, The Salvation Army realized that there was a need to extend her facilities to other parts of the country. Subsequently, from 1999- 2002 schools were opened in corps halls in Margibi, Bong and Bassa Counties. These include the Kakata Corps Primary School official named Albert Orsborn Primary and Elementary School in 2009 with the construction of a semi-structure of six classrooms by the Education Secretariat. The Buchanan Corps Primary School was officially named Bramwell Booth Primary and Elementary in 2010 and Paul A. Rader Primary and Elementary elevated to junior high level in 2011 with the construction of a sixteen room ultra-modern complex. The Bill Norris School was established in 2003. It is named after one of The Salvation Army colonels.  John Gowans High School was established in Salala, Bong County in 2004 to serve the growing need for high school education in that part of the country.  TSA- Zwedru Daycare School was opened in Zwedru Corps in 2005 and was turn over to the Secretariat in 2010. It was named Karsten Anker Sunhill Elementary & Junior High School after the construction of sixteen room school edifice. The School was named after one of Norway Territorial Commanders. Most the school construction projects were sponsored by funding from Norway through The Salvation Army Norway, Iceland and the Faeroes Territory.
