Salvation Army Team in Pakistan Embarks on Winter Relief Programme

THE Salvation Army in Pakistan has mounted an ambitious programme to offer winter relief resources to people still suffering the consequences of the devastating earthquake of October 2005. Many families in the more remote mountain villages of northern Pakistan are struggling to recover. Now that winter has arrived, people in some of the most difficult-to-access areas are finding it a challenge to survive the cold, yet alone recover what they lost in the earthquake.
Targeting 40 remote hamlets in the mountains surrounding Balakot, a team of Salvation Army officers led by Captain MacDonald Chandi delivered more than 4,000 quilts and 3,500 iron roofing-sheets to the struggling communities. In all, more than 1,350 families benefited from the programme.
Due to the remoteness of the villages, the Army’s relief team received assistance from INSAN, a local relief agency, and the Pakistan military to ensure the materials could be delivered into the hardest-to-reach areas.
Donations to the South Asia Disaster Fund will provide much-needed resources that will allow the Army’s team in Pakistan to continue to help families whom others seem to have forgotten.
