A SALVATION Army relief team from the Hong Kong and Macau Command is on its way to Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, to see how best the Army can provide help to the many thousands of people affected by the earthquake that killed around 20,000 people. The team will immediately deliver food to survivors and find out their needs in order to distribute the most urgent relief supplies. A comprehensive on-site assessment will then help with the decision as to what ongoing help The Salvation Army can provide.
Gordon Lewis (International Emergency Services) says: 'Our reports suggest the Chinese military are doing as well as they possibly can to rescue survivors and clear the worst-affected sites. The assessment carried out by our colleagues from Hong Kong will give a good idea as to what needs to be done next. When we get more information we will share it as soon as possible.'
