More than 50,000 people are homeless and living in temporary camps guarded by armed police as a result of ethnic clashes around Guwahati in the Assam province of Eastern India. Salvation Army personnel have visited the people affected as part of a coordinated response organised by the Christian Forum in the area.
The Salvation Army is responding in villages in particularly hilly and remote terrain around Guwahati. In these villages eight people have been killed and their houses destroyed. More than 4,000 people have fled, leaving their belongings behind and are now homeless. The Salvation Army has assessed the need in three camps and has already distributed basic supplies. Plans are underway to take mosquito nets, blankets and winter clothing to the affected families as well as nutritional items for the babies.
