The Seruyanges’s story: a new home

The Seruyange family share their incredible story of resilience, courage, and the power of community. After fleeing Uganda in search of safety, they found themselves alone in San Bernardino. An encounter with The Salvation Army changed everything, offering them hope, support and a new family in Pasadena.

‘The reason we left is mainly for the security of our lives.

‘From the stories we've heard about America, the movies we've watched. I thought everyone in America is rich. Life is going to be so smooth. We had no idea of what we would be facing.

‘That night was not easy because a lot of thoughts were running in our minds. We didn't have any money for dinner. You don't know where you're going to sleep. This guy had connected us to someone who had a house in San Fernando Valley, but we’re going to rent a room in that house. There were about 15 people that were sleeping in a two bedroom house.

‘A week after we had come, we started looking for a church and we came across The Salvation Army. They said we have to do something. We are going to introduce you guys to our church family. They took us to the food bank and they told us, just get whatever you need. A Captain Masango invited us to come for service here at the corps. People from the corps gave us everything that you can think about.

‘We had to wait for our paperwork to come through. Then we started looking for employment and then we got our own apartment.’

‘This is a couple that were successful, yet because of the problems they were facing in Uganda, they ran away with the clothes on their backs. We were just compelled by God's love to help fellow human beings, and Pasadena, for them, has become home because of what they've experienced through the community.’
