EVERY year over US$1 trillion goes missing from the global economy through bribes, dishonest deals and tax evasion. This impacts the world's poorest people most.
That’s why The Salvation Army is supporting EXPOSED – a global call to action against corruption, greed, secret deals, bribery and abuse of public influence.
And it's not just money lost – corruption kills. It is predicted that illegal tax evasion will be responsible for 5.6 million children dying in developing countries between 2000 and 2015. That’s some 1,000 children every day.
Colonel Geanette Seymour, Director of The Salvation Army’s International Social Justice Commission explains: ‘Corruption undermines good governance and the rule of law, leads to violations of human rights, distorts markets and erodes the quality of life. Corruption is a key element in economic under-performance and a major obstacle to poverty alleviation and development. It goes against the tenets of justice, human dignity, empathy with the needy and spiritual stewardship.’
With our partners, we are seeking 1 million people to sign the Global Call – a petition for integrity.
Also, during the week 14–20 October 2013 there will be 2,000 vigils worldwide, including opportunities for creative prayer and action for a world free of corruption. Officers and staff from The Salvation Army's International Headquarters have been invited to attend the high-profile vigil at nearby St Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London, UK.
