Chief of the Staff Leads Self-Denial Appeal Launch in Maidenhead, UKTHE Chief of the Staff, Commissioner Robin Dunster, recalled a hair-raising overseas experience – a bumpy double pillion ride – during an international evening at Maidenhead. Joined by Lieut-Colonel Edna Williams (International Headquarters), who served with the commissioner in Africa and under her territorial leadership in The Philippines, the Chief gave personal insights into the Army’s worldwide work during her weekend visit to launch the Self-Denial Missionary Appeal. The Saturday cafe-style evening was informal, informative, entertaining and thought-provoking as, between intervals of music and drama presented by the host corps, the missionary-officer 'double act' showed slides and described the consequences of choices and sacrifices they had made during their years of extraordinary service.
Supporting the Chief on her visit were UK Territorial Headquarters representatives Majors John and Dorita Wainwright, who will shortly be leaving for appointments in Zambia – one of UK's five partner territories.
Commissioner Dunster spoke about her recent visit to Beijing, China, new Army developments in the African countries of Burundi, Namibia and Mali, and the fact that Angola is to become a separate command.
The Self-Denial Appeal theme ‘Give It Up for the Lord’ continued during Sunday’s meetings. Focusing on the compassion of Jesus which he translated into action even at difficult, vulnerable times, the Chief of the Staff asked the pertinent question: ‘What’s our reaction to people who interrupt our schedule?’
Lieut-Colonel Williams echoed that challenge when, during the Sunday evening meeting, she talked about ‘perfect’ life-choices.
