LIBERIA COMMAND TO CELEBRATE 25TH ANNIVERSARY:

OFFICER COMMANDING DECLARES 2013 – YEAR OF DISCIPLING

Major preparation is ongoing for the celebration of Liberia Command 25th Anniversary to be held from December 5-8, 2013. The Chief of Staff & Commissioner Silvia Cox, among many dignitaries are expected to grace the occasion. Meanwhile, the Officer Commanding, Lt. Col. Festus Oloruntoba, has declared 2013 as a Year of Discipling, taken from Matthew 28:19. He made the call on January 3, 2013 during a fellowship meeting for the resumption of work at the Command Headquarters after the 2012 Christmas break. "We must go to the outermost part of Liberia and bring back the lost souls, he lamented."

14 Cadets in Training at OTC

The Liberia Command Officers Training College resumed on the first week of February 2013. First in history, the College received the highest number of cadets, seven males and females. Six of the cadets came from Sierra Leone for the first time.

THE SALVATION ARMY MEETING LIBERIA’S EDUCATION NEEDS

The Salvation Army School System continues to run smoothly amidst many national challenges. Supervision is being reinforced to maintain the standards and core values of the School System. There is still a constructive focus on the five year strategic plan as the Secretariat strives to maintain its vision and mission of providing quality education in Liberia. School finances continued to be properly managed through organized spending approved by the Education Board as the System remains firmly self-sustainable. With the support of international partners, the School System is making progressive impact in meeting Liberia’s education needs.

The Youth Department of The Salvation Army has continued to make impact in the work of the Command. Over 40 youth stormed the Township of Flehlah in Bong County in observance of the Corps 2012 Youth Anniversary. Through the work of the youth many young people are responding to the Gospel.

ACTIVITIES OF FBF IN THE SALVATION ARMY LIBERIA COMMAND

The Salvation Army Liberia Command Faith-Based Facilitation Team conducted series of activities beginning January 2013. Some of which include project need assessment in Freetown, conducting capacity building workshop, providing platform for students, teachers and administrators within The Salvation Army School System on how to express their concerns that might have the propensity to cause underperformance of each party and also helping to explore amicable solution to their concerns using the FBF approach. Some of these activities are highlighted in photos below.

MISSION ACTIVITES

Series of enrollment activities have been on going in the Liberia Command by this year 2013. The scene is a group of enrolled soldiers at Voker Mission Plant in Paynesville. Eight soldiers were enrolled.

The Officer Commanding and other Command leaders celebrated the 2013 Easter Weekend at Greenville Corps and Bilibokree Outpost in Sinoe County as part of the calendar of events. During the celebration the Officer Commanding declared the work in Bilibokree officially opened and recognized Bilibokree as an outpost. 21 soldiers were enrolled. The OC also enrolled 17 soldiers at the dedicatory program of the Gbarnga Corps, the largest corps hall in the Command, with 18 soldiers enrolled at Monrovia City Corps during the Monrovia City Section 2012 Congress.

2013 WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

INTERSTING STORIES

The 2013 World Day of Prayer was held at the Command Headquarters and it was the first time that men and women had attended and participated together. All the Command Headquarters staff including the Officer Commanding, Lieut. Colonel Festus Oloruntoba, and the Cadets of Disciples of the Cross Session were present to grace the occasion. The Cadets performed a drama in title I WAS A STRANGER AND YOU WELCOME ME. The "Women of France" was well performed and everyone was inspired by the dramas. The message was very inspirational and challenging to the people who attended the meeting. The day was a remarkable one that saw everyone in the attitude of prayer. We thank God for the blessing of that day.

COMMAND EDUCATION TEAM TRAVELLED TO LOFA COUNTY

A team comprising of the Director and the Deputy Director of the Education Secretariat and the Coordinator for Program of the Vocational, Technical & Professional Training Center travelled to Foya, Lofa County on January 18, 2013 for a three day visit. The purpose of the visit was to make a feasibility study for opening of schools both vocational and circular in Foya in the near future. Also on the trip were the General Secretary and the Field Secretary. The delegation had time to meet with elders of Foya and the Vice President of Liberia who had been instrumental to seeing the Army in Lofa. The visit was fruitful.

TSA-VTPTC GETS SUPPORT FROM CANADA

The Salvation Army Vocational,

Technical & Professional Training Center in November 2012 received support from Canada & Bermuda Territory for the purchase of survey equipment, training tools and materials. Others include professional training books and computers. The Center which was established in 2008 has been a support in the enhancement of technical and vocational educational training in Liberia.

The General has approved the appointment of additional expatriate staff to assist in the service and ministry of the Liberia Command. Major Richmond Obeng & Dora Appau as Training Principal and Home Officer at OTC respectively from Ghana Territory. Major Wilson & Besnati Chiwoya as Finance Secretary and social service secretary respectively from Zambia.

Majors William & Florence Mutungi who served as Finance Secretary and Social Service Secretary respectively received a change of appointment to Uganda Territory. Captain Moses & Lieut. Linda Turay bid farewell to Liberia after giving five years of service at CHQ, OTC and Corps.

International Visitors

A team from Canada & Bermuda Territory led by Major G. Brown visited the Command. The visit took them to the following places, Lofa, Salala, Mount Coffee and Kporlormu. They also visited Sierra Leone. The purpose of the visit was to view and video tape projects and show video around their Territory for self denial appeal in support of Liberia Command – being partners in mission.
