Corps Numbers

back to 'Corps History'

Numbers were not given to corps until the end of 1878, after the name of The Christian Mission had been changed The Salvation Army. By this time, some of the Mission stations in the East End of London had ceased to operate, for example, Bromley, Cubitt Town, Fieldgate, Shoreditch, and North Woolwich. Numbers were given to the remaining 81 centres, scattered throughout England and Wales. Unfortunately they were not listed in the correct chronological order, hence Stoke Newington opened on Sunday, 1 May 1870, was numbered 7, but Croydon (now Croydon Citadel), already opened on Sunday, 4 July 1869 was listed number 9.
