KEEP 'THE FLAME' BURNING

History
The prayer network The Flame (Eldsflamman) started in Sweden in 1999. The Field Secretary at that time, Colonel Kristina Frisk, saw the need for prayer for the future. She initiated the network and very soon 200 soldiers and friends had signed up and promised to pray for their corps and the community around them. These were the prayer items that were written on the paper that the intercessors signed:

• salvation of the unsaved
• the young people
• officers and other spiritual leaders
• financial resources

As the network grew the Field Secretary formed a team of officers and lay people who became the cabinet for The Flame. The group had six members at the beginning and arranged prayer conferences in each division. After some time however the corps leaders started to call the team for prayer weekends and they travelled around the country.

In 2001 Major Mona Stockman was appointed as Candidate Secretary and Territorial Coordinator for the prayer network.

Today
The mission of The Flame is to encourage and resource prayer at all levels. ‘Today we can see that the initial formation of the team and the teaching of the basics of prayer laid a solid ground for what God had in store for The Salvation Army in Sweden and Latvia', says Major Mona Stockman, Spiritual Life Development Secretary. ‘We are still called to corps and to different events to pray and teach on prayer. The focus is now on deepening the personal prayer life, strategic prayer for the city and spiritual mapping. We have seen how prayer opens doors that have been closed for the gospel of Jesus Christ for a long time. We also see a "homecoming movement" in many places. People who have been out of their spiritual home are returning'.

A territorial leadership conference was held from this past 20th-22nd of March and the cabinet for The Flame was asked to form a prayer team during these days.

Many leaders came to the altar and brought their burdens for themselves and the people they serve. 'Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him'. (Psalm 126:5-6)

During the seminars Lieut-Colonel Janet Munn, Secretary for Spiritual Life Development shared God's word about spiritual disciplines, the Global Call to 24-7 prayer and Luke 18:1-8.

‘In the last meeting we heard testimonies from different places in Sweden where
God has answered prayer in a mighty way', Major Mona testifies.

At the moment The Flame is working with the implementation of prayer leaders at a local level based on the passage from Isaiah 56:7 " My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations". These leaders are working close to their corps officers and have responsibility for the strategy for prayer in the corps as "watchmen" (Ezekiel 3:17).

The result has been an increasing amount of prayer groups and soldiers who are taking a response for the work at a local level. Mona shares that Salvationists are gaining a stronger awareness and longing to live a holy life, ‘we have seen young adults taking steps towards officership. We still desire to see more people come to Jesus and get saved!
