WEETAMAH: A COMMUNITY IN ACTION!
In brief, Weetamah's objectives are as follows:
1. To improve the prospects of the youth within the core area through the provision of:
- A safe environment for youth to "hang out" and get away from the pressures inner city street life.
- A variety of positive programs, activities, games, and outings which reinforce healthy living.
- Assistance in developing significant friendships and providing positive role models.
2. To empower Inner City Youth and Families, through community-based, relevant programs and supports with the following priorities:
- Life Skills development (via teaching opportunities within programs such as the Kids Club, Midnight Challenge, Women Together, etc.)
- Strengthening of community and family support systems as a means of combating cycles of poverty, violence, and the deterioration of family systems.
- Providing a holistic environment where spiritual, emotional and social issues can be explored.
- Providing an environment, which affirms the worth and dignity of all people and cultures.
- Providing opportunities for leadership development and training for youth and adults who live in the Centennial Community.
3. To provide practical assistance and support for folks from the inner city. Many of whom are struggling with the effects of poverty, homelessness, and addiction, etc.
- Provision of a drop in center and meal program on Friday Evenings.
- Mobilization of a Street Ministry
- Provision of food and other emergency assistance
4. To promote community cooperation and unity within the context of our existing programs and to broaden collaborative efforts within the larger Inner City community by creating intentional linkages between program areas at Weetamah and within the broader Aboriginal Community.
